Building Your Brand 50 min

Students will develop knowledge about brand identities and use this to create a statement for themselves, a personal brand. This allows students to take what they have learned about themselves so far and begin to think about how this statement will inform their future decision-making.

Introduce students to the concept of a ‘brand’ and a ‘brand statement by playing the All About Brands video.

Have students complete the Brand Mix & Match activity. In this activity, students will be given a list of brand mission statements with empty boxes next to them. Above these statements will be a scrambled cluster of brand names that students will recognize. The student must match the brand name to the correct statement. The purpose is to show how the brand name becomes associated with certain perceptions and traits, which will inform their answers, whether correct or not. Are they able to recognize which brand fits depending on whether they believe the brand reflects the values and ideas within their statement?

Once the class has completed the assignment, lead a discussion on the concept of a brand and why a lot of brands create mission or vision statements. You can use the following prompts to generate discussion:

Did you feel the brands accurately reflected their statements?
Why do you think brands create these statements?
What do you think makes the difference between a good and bad brand statement?

After this discussion, assign students the Building Your Brand activity where they will create their personal brand statement.
