Barbers cut, trim and style hair at barber shops and salons. They are creators, connectors and entrepreneurs who keep their clients looking sharp by creating precise shapes using razors, combs, and clippers.

Creative and adaptable, barbers need to stay on top of trends in order to provide the freshest cuts for their clients. They give style suggestions to clients, as well as facial hair grooming and massages. Barbershops tend to be local hang-out spots, so barbers need to have excellent customer service skills and create a welcoming environment for people to connect.

Barbers must either complete an accredited training program offered through a barber or cosmetology school or have completed an apprenticeship. They also need to pass a state licensure exam in order to practice. Jobs for barbers are expected to slightly decline by 2029.
