Children’s Book Illustrator
Children’s book illustrators work alongside authors to develop and produce a story’s visual concept. They are makers and creators who stimulate children’s imaginations and assist in their creative development.
Book illustrators use different media, from paint, pastel and watercolor to computer programs. They must be creative and artistic, with a firm grasp on elements of composition and multiple art mediums. They must also have excellent time-management skills and work well under pressure for handling multiple deadlines. Children’s book illustrators may work as freelance artists against intense competition, so they need to be adept at networking and marketing, as well as maintain a professional portfolio showcasing their skills and experience.
Formal education isn’t required, but a visual arts degree with a concentration in illustration can help develop the skills and professionalism necessary to be a successful children’s books illustrator. Coursework in computer aided design and editing software, as well as business and marketing, would also be useful. Available jobs for fine artists is expected to increase 1% between 2018 and 2028.
