English Language and Literature Teacher
English language and literature teachers are the ones that teach us about the structure, syntax, and usage of the English language in moving and engaging ways. They are educators and explorers whose instruction can combine imagination with real life application by helping students to dissect books, plays, poetry, and other works with critical thinking skills. They host discussions of theory and ideology found in these works, and help people to identify themes, points of view, and character traits that can relate back to our everyday lives.
You can find English language and literature teachers in every grade level from middle school to college. Becoming an English language and literature teacher varies by state. Some schools will require both a bachelor’s degree and a postsecondary teaching certification. Jobs for this role are expected to grow 4% by 2028.
