If you want to share your intense love of nature with people seeking a similar experience, consider a career as an outdoor guide. Hiking/climbing guides are leaders, explorers and thrill seekers who create and lead people on amazing outdoor experiences.
Hiking and climbing guides must be skilled problem-solvers and efficient decision-makers, as well as have strong interpersonal and customer service skills and physical stamina. They lead groups on hikes or climbs, teach participants about the surrounding environment, and ensure all safety standards are being met. They may also perform first aid in emergencies, as well as research the surrounding environment.
Breaking into the outdoor industry requires a passion for the outdoors and knowledge on the natural and human history of the area. Experience and certifications from associations like the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) and the American Hiking Guides Association (AHGA) are definitely a plus. Positions for recreation workers are expected to increase 8% by 2028.
