Jewelers are artists who create, design and sell jewelry. They also repair and maintain jewelry and work at a variety of shops: from independently owned stores to renowned chains.To build a successful career as a jeweler, you need to be creative, good with your hands and possessed of sound communication and interpersonal skills. Most jewelers need to work in close collaboration with other people, have clients, or business partners. Almost half of jewelers were self-employed in 2010, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Many of these worked from their homes or studios and sold their jewelry at trade and craft shows. Salaried workers in the profession are typically employed in jewelry stores, repair shops and manufacturing plants.
