Medical Equipment Preparer
Medical equipment preparers are responsible for preparing and sterilizing laboratory or healthcare equipment, such as respirators, hospital beds, and surgical instruments. They are analyzers, contributors, and organizers who play an integral role in preventing infections and the spread of viruses by ensuring instruments and equipment are properly sterilized. In addition to preparation and sterilization, these technicians also install and inspect equipment, prepare operating areas with proper supplies and equipment, and perform routine laboratory tasks.
This is a role for folks who are organized, work well under pressure, are good at multitasking and are super detailed. They also need strong critical thinking skills, the ability to make quick decisions, and must be able to work independently. Manual dexterity is also important, as medical equipment preparers spent a lot of time working with their hands.
Medical equipment preparers are required to have a high school diploma or equivalent, and they often receive job-specific knowledge and skills through on-the-job training. Certification isn’t required by all employers, but some prefer to hire those who are certified as a sterile processing technician. Jobs for medical equipment preparers are expected to grow by 13% by 2026.
