Long the heroes of pulpy novels and intriguing television, police detectives fulfill a crucial and often gritty role in our society. Every major police department employs detectives to investigate the crimes that can't be solved through simple scene work or confession. Detectives work crime scenes, interview suspects, and assemble pieces of evidence when serious crimes have been committed, building a case that district attorneys can then take to court if called for. While there isn't nearly the glory to be had in these jobs as the serial TV shows would make it seem, they are highly competitive positions. The most enterprising and ambitious police tend to ascend toward these jobs.
