School board members are elected officials in their communities who make educational policy and act as stewards for public education in their districts.

While the goals are often the same, differences in duties will depend on a person’s particular seat on a board as well as on the size and budget of the district. Like most non-partisan local positions, school board members often work on part-time salaries or outright volunteer their time if they can.

The people who hold these jobs typically have a deep passion for education and community-building and have either come to the board through working in schools directly or with relevant local businesses and initiatives.
