Wholesale and Manufacturing Sales Representative

Wholesale and manufacturing sales representatives sell goods for wholesalers or manufacturers to businesses, government agencies, and other organizations. Some work for a single organization, while others represent several companies and sell a range of products.

They are competitors and entrepreneurs who are adept at hustling and networking, and have excellent interpersonal skills. They need to be persuasive and work well under pressure, as companies usually set sales goals or quotas they need to meet to maintain job security. Some wholesale and manufacturing sales representatives have large territories that cover several states and travel for several days or weeks at a time – so physical stamina is also key.

Educational requirements and salary ranges vary depending on the type of products sold. A high school diploma is usually sufficient for positions selling nontechnical or scientific products like food or office supplies; to sell scientific and technical products – like pharmaceuticals or industrial equipment – representatives usually need a bachelor’s degree in a field related to the product sold, such as chemistry or engineering. Non-scientific or technical sales reps generally make between $30-125K annually, whereas those selling scientific or technical products make between $41-159K. Employment is projected to grow 2% by 2028.
