Financial Literacy is the first step towards having financial freedom. This unit is a comprehensive introduction to earning, saving, and spending your very first wages. Students will cover fundamentals such as taxes, checking and savings accounts, budgeting, and more.
The role of social media in students’ lives can be a source of pleasure and/or pain. However, students need to be accountable for their communications and also be equipped with the tools to hold others accountable. It is important that students are able to understand how social media is a communication tool that can also provide opportunities for them in the future as well. The first step is a student’s awareness of the information they are producing on social media and any impact it might have.
In this lesson, we focus on the impact social media can have on their future. Making social media mistakes is one thing, but knowing how to react or respond is another issue in itself. It is important for kids to understand they are going mistakes, intentional or not, and they need to have a strategy in place for if/when. How students react will make all of the difference for their digital footprint, online reputation, and search results. Understanding media bias and perspective is another critical skill that one must possess in order to appropriately sift through the massive amounts of information that is available each and every day.
Students have spent a lot of time figuring out who they are and who they want to become. An important question to ask is “what does your social media say about you?”
In this lesson, students will be asked to “research” their friend’s social media presence and provide feedback. This feedback from others will give them a unique perspective of how they represent themselves in the digital world. Are students being vigilant of information they are putting out for anyone to access? Understanding the ins and outs of how to be safe and secure online is a critical skill in the digital society we live in.
