The Find Your Grind Podcast, Episode 4: Tyger Shark founders and the power in working hard
The Find Your Grind podcast is a weekly series hosted by our founders, Nick Gross, Natasha Gross, Mike Smith, and Luke “The Dingo” Trembeth. Each week, we speak with special guests on the first 10% of their personal journey, decisions that led them where they are today, and how they built their ideas from finding their grind. In this week’s episode, Nick Gross and Dingo sat down with founders of Tyger Shark, Jimmy Furlano and Tyler Murray.
Entrepreneurs and innovators, Jimmy Furlano and Tyler Murray built their success from every job, experience, and class they took. Being passionate to learn, Jimmy and Tyler separately created their own experiences with jobs and schools that helped them discover what they wanted to do, learn through failure, build their skill set, or expand their network. Each of these opportunities eventually shaped their current agency, Tyger Shark.
Growing up in Barrie, Canada, Jimmy played soccer but an injury acted as divine alignment that he was meant to pursue a different life path. Jimmy went to 4 different high schools which constantly gave him new experiences. As his first job, Tyler worked the fry machine at McDonald’s and learned about pressure, teamwork, and showing up.
“But the same things I learned with working at McDonald’s — of showing up on time, going after at, working as a team, hustling in a sense of like just being active and present in what you’re doing. Those fundamentals apply to every single career on earth.” — Tyler Murray
Jimmy would go on to college, gain a business degree but didn’t know what to do afterwards so began pursuing other paths to narrow down what he wanted while strengthening his skill sets. Later, Tyler went into e-commerce, riding the wave of when the internet became first used as a communication source, founding Tyger Shark in 1993/1994. Together they would meet at the center of being passionate towards learning, a strong business acumen, and technical skills in coding and website design. Between their resumes, they’ve discovered that no job was too small for a person.
“I worked hard before I learned how to work smart.” — Jimmy Furlano
Today, Tyger Shark stands as an Advertising and Marketing agency that specializes in building out e-commerce platforms and websites for music artists and leading popular brands such as October’s Very Own, Drake, The Toronto Raptors, NTWRK, Universal Pictures, Majid Jordan, and Find Your Grind. Jimmy and Tyler share a history and message of “work hard before working smart,” by taking every opportunity to build their skill set and network. Their passion to learn and unwilling to allow failure be a detriment but become an opportunity for growth is an invigorating story of the power of tenacity.
